Now let’s get back to the main point of this article: Geiko and Maiko performance for free in Kyoto !!
First of all what is a Geiko? It is actually the name usually used in Kyoto for Geisha, who are women who serve and entertain guests with their performance, such as dance and shamisen play.
Then Maiko? There are apprentice geisha, usually from 15 to 20 years old, meaning that they are still training in traditional dances and music instrument,as well as etiquette of hospitality.
Most of the time they can be seen in Gion area in downtown Kyoto. Anyway they are participating in a lot of events through the year, such as the Kitano Odori in March, a dance performance in the Kitano Tenmangu temple area, the Aoi festival in May (parade of people wearing costume from Heian era) and many mores.
FREE PERFORMANCES IN MARCH
Most of these performances require to buy a ticket, but free performances can be seen on stage at the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts.
Dates of performances:
*Maiko: March 5th, 19th and 26th; performances starts at 14:00 , 14:30, 15:30
*Geiko: March 12th, 18th, and 20th at 14:00, 14:30 and 15:00 (special seats can be purchased for 1,000 yen, but this is limited to 10 persons! these lucky ones will also be able to take a picture with the geiko, and receive a gift from her )
