For many, the Japan Rail Pass is a lifesaver and a cheap way to get around Japan in style. But, there has always been a problem, you can could only buy the pass from overseas at certain travel agents. Which means, if you forgot to get it, or left the pass at home (because you need to exchange the physical ticket at a JR office that you got from your travel agent), you were out of luck.
Luckily, that has changed! The Japan Rail Pass is now available from certain JR sales offices within Japan, as long as you have a foreign passport and a “Temporary Visitor” stamp in it.
The pass is a little more expensive within Japan form the JR Service Centers (known as Midori-no-madoguchi or Green Ticket Window), but being able to buy it mid-way through your trip is helpful for those who missed out overseas.
