Maid Cafes are wonderful!Besides Manga/Anime stores, the Maid Cafes in Akihabara are some of the famous places here. Of course there also Maid Cafes in other cities but Akihabara has maybe the best Maid Cafes in Japan. The most famous ones are @home cafe and Maidreamin, but there are different independent ones as well. They also have several branches in Akihabara or different areas of Tokyo and Japan.
When you leave the Akihabara station and walk around you will already see some of the maid girls distributing pamphlets to get new possible customers.
What is a Maid Cafe? While a Maid Cafe might seem self expansionary, there are some subtle differences to what you may be thinking of. Basically, it is a cafe with mostly young cute girls wearing maid costumes who are waiting to treat you. Of course, it depends on the cafe, so the costumes and the concept of the shops are everywhere different. Some Maid Cafes try to copy the traditional European maid style while others have the sexy or super kawaii maids. There’s even a maid cafe where all the maids are dressed as train conductors and you’re surrounded by model trains. Which style of maid cafe would you like to see?
When you enter a Maid Cafe, the maids will greet you with “Welcome my master/ my mistress” (in Japanese). Depending on the cafe the menu has dishes like cake, ice cream and other sweets or even Omelette rice, spaghetti, etc. Usually they decorate the dishes in a very cute way. You can get a ice cream looking like a cat!
The maids are always treating you as their master/mistress, so they are very polite. But how should you speak with the maid?
To start with, you should not ask them about their private life and not touch them. This will get you quickly ejected from the cafe and a ban for life.
In the most Maid Cafes you can make a photo with your favourite maid. Usually the staff makes a photo with a Polaroid camera and you can keep the photo as a souvenir. Photos with smartphones are in the cafes not allowed. Of course you can take a photo of the food but not of the maids by yourself! If you pay extra money you can even play a game with the maid you like. When you win you can get a present.
In some cafes the maids also do for the customers a show. They sing and want let the customers feel like they’re at home.
To say the truth it is kinda expensive to visit a maid cafe. For most foreigners, it can sometimes be very strange to see all the male customers fanboying over what seems to be younger females, especially the older salarymen who come by on their work break.
Even though this experience sounds geared towards males (to tell you the truth, it kind of is), females can also enjoy the cuteness overload that is a maid cafe. Though, if you’re not interested in that, then there are also Butler Cafes, mostly centralised in Harajuku, and Danso Cafes, which are females that dress like men and very popular with women.
