Before Tokyo was the modern metropolis it is now, it was a small fishing town called Edo, located along the Sumida river. One of the few places that retains the old flavor of Edo is Asakusa. In this ever-changing world the spirit of old Japan can be elusive, but you can feel it lurking in Asakusa. We recommend visiting the Kaminari-mon, or taking a stroll through the quiet backways of the town. A little to the north in Ueno's Ameyoko, just listening to the hawkers and spruckers you can get a feel for the colorful, lively haggling that used to be the hallmark of the district.
