Japan is now experiencing the coldest winter
in decades. Many parts of the country are
facing the lowest temperature and the heaviest
snowfall in their history.
But most people went back to their home town
to spend Oshogatsu (new year's holiday)
with their families, just like the usual
years.
On New Year's Eve, people go to a Buddhism
temple or a Shinto shrine where bells speeding
the old year are rung, to pray for health
and happiness in the new year.They
eat Toshikoshi-soba (year
crossing soba noodle) to wish for a long
and healthy life.
They draw omikuji, written oracles,
obtained by drawing lots in which the good
or bad
luck of events is indicated through praying.
Major temples and shrines have omikuji written
in English. Its not too late to test your
luck of the year - why not try them ?
